Pirates are very bad people, thankfully though, being a pirate in eve doesnÆt necessarily mean you are a bad person in real life. I read an interesting bio one time, it went into a pseudo psycho-philosophical discussion about how pirate players are living out their fantasies in EVE and that in real life they wish they were this glamorous do badder. It went on to suggest that we all do this, but hold on about 25% of characters seem to be women, but what 2 û5% of players are women? Does this mean + of men wish to be women? *Shrugs* Maybe. I spent my first 6 months in Eve mining, I know for a fact I donÆt dream of being a miner in RL. Now there are a lot of directions I could go with my point, so I am going to focus on only a couple.
1) EVE is not a peaceful hug everyone place. EVE is designed so we have ôhigh secö, ôlow secö,ö0.0ö (people have different terms sometimes but we can stick with those) in low sec you can be shot at by anyone. This is the realm of pirates, if there were no pirates, there would be no point in low sec. I am sure some people would say ôGoodö but lets face it, the tools to protect and minimise risk in low sec are provided to us. So being ganked in low sec is because you made a mistake or you havenÆt learned yet. ThatÆs a tad of a diversion so back to the point low sec requires a population of ôbaddiesö to make it really low sec. Those people who play a role, which in itself plays an important part in shaping EVE as it was intended to be. You might even say they are roleplayers. Lightning bolt anyone?
2) Ethics in games: The battle between good and evil How many people here who are against piracy have played games like Grand Theft Auto, Hitman, Carmageddon or even nod in C&C. Any RTS tends towards the ôgoodiesö and the ôbaddiesö. I doubt many would say those who take the ôdark pathö in a single player game have some simmering evil side. Of course many would argue that in a multiplayer game its not okay because killing a player is not the same thing. In CS, planetside and a plethora of other games its ok to kill others wantonly, suddenly because of the ôpenaltiesö associated with death its not all right. I am in ASCN we are at war with BOB. I havenÆt paid much attention but from my understanding it is BOB who attacked, I could be wrong, but either way I didnÆt want the war, so if I get killed by a BOBite does that make them bad people for destroying whatever I spent real money (subscription I mean) and my valuable time to build. I doubt many would say so. I think most would say, that I put myself in the position, I donÆt have to be a member of ASCN. You donÆt have to go to low sec. You donÆt have to fly around in a paper thin hauler with 1billion of stuff in it through a risky high sec system.
Inevitably it boils down to your own view of right or wrong, but when you are thinking about it, remember, its only a game. Just like a single player game you can take a wrong turn without saving and find that you have to go back maybe several hours of time to carry on. What you have to remember is that just as a pirate should be mindful that you are paying for the game and playing in your own way, so are they. It says on the box (and on the website) what might happen, so its not like we are playing in ignorance.
